The Friends of McCoy Society is holding a concert featuring local musicians in the hopes of raising funds for McCoy High School’s proposed theatre program.

The concert, which will be held at Verve Cafe, is headlined by Medicine Hat musician Kyle Church and will feature a selection of “easy listening” music. Up and coming musician Simon Frelick, also of Medicine Hat, is opening the show.

After years of advocating for a theatre program at McCoy, Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education board chair and Friends of McCoy Society member, Kathy Glasgo, is delighted to see community members coming together in support.

“The theatre program is extremely important,” Glasgo told the News. “If it all gets approved, the school board will build the building, but the Friends of McCoy will help fill the building with sound equipment or whatever is needed.”

Friends of McCoy Society co-chair Helen Snortland shares in Glasgo’s excitement.

“One of the reasons we are building a theatre by McCoy is so we have more opportunity to keep the fine arts students from St. Mary’s School in the (MHCBE) system, rather than seeking out fine arts avenues in other places,” Snortland said.

Snortland says the society is hoping to hold additional fundraising concerts later this year.

An Evening with Kyle Church fundraising concert begins at 7 p.m. on July 23. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online by visiting the ‘Kyle Church at Verve Cafe, Medicine Hat’ Facebook page.
