It’s chuckwagon racing time in Medicine Hat.

Medicine Hat Stampede & Exhibition is hosting the World Professional Chuckwagon Races at the Stampede grounds from Thursday through Sunday.

General manager Ron Edwards says he is quite excited for the races to begin.

“I think the weather is going to certainly be with us this weekend, and the track is good,” Edwards said. “The wagons are all pulling in, we’re very excited, everybody’s ready to go. It’s going to be a great weekend.”

There will be 36 drivers for a total of 12 heats over the four days competing for a spot in the final, “Dash for Cash” on Sunday. Edwards says organizers are happy to have the event between the April spring rodeo and July’s Stampede.

“Our committees are excited, they’re all working to put all the different aspects of the summer fair together and chuckwagons as well,” Edwards said. “Right now we’re concentrating on chuckwagons this week and then we’re off to the next event as soon as it’s over.”

Races get started Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., with Sunday’s big finale starting at 2 p.m.

“The last race is the Dash for Cash, that’s the big one,” Edwards said. “That’s why the drivers work all week to get the best time so they can get into the Dash for Cash.”

Edwards says there will also be a Father’s Day brunch, which starts at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. The cost of the meal is $24.95 and anyone interested can call the MH Exhibition & Stampede office at 403-527-1234.
