Jurassic Solar would have a capacity of 300 megawatts and, coupled with battery storage to feed the Alberta grid, could cost C$500 million if it is built at the site 12 kilometres southwest of Jenner. On Thursday, AESO announced it was launching a needs assessment for the related infrastructure and access to connect the power plant to the existing line in the area. The developer, Greengate Power, told Cypress County council last year it had plans to build two major solar arrays with connected battery storage in southeast Alberta. “Midnight Solar” would be a larger project, sized to 500 megawatts with storage, located near the Box Springs area 12 kilometres north of Medicine Hat and south of the boundary of CFB Suffield. Neither project has been submitted to the Alberta Utilities Commission, which would consider them separately. Empress Plant A note on the AESO website states the cogeneration project being completed by Pembina Pipelines at its Empress gas plant would be added to the system operators capacity board in July. The company is adding a 46-megawatt gas turbine to supply the plant’s own demand, with some ability to export production. 11
