Construction workers with renewable power project builder Borea Construction are in line for a 7 per cent wage hike over two years following ratification of a new collection bargaining agreement.

The deal is noted in the May bulletin of settlements posted by Alberta Labour and involves 290 workers represented by the Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC) No. 63.

The changes were applied in March and provide 5.5. per cent raise then 1.5 in the second year of the deal that ends in November 2023.

The company has worked extensively in southeast Alberta on portions or as general contractor on several wind or solar power facilities. It is currently hiring for projects in Jenner, Suffield, Oyen and Medicine Hat.

Other settlements of note in the summary revolve around the public sector.

Non-academic staff at Lethbridge College and Red Deer Polytechnique and the faculty at Norquest College each ratified similar new contracts. They show three- or four-year wage freezes, then a 2.75 per cent raise in final years with another 0.5 per cent possible based on inflation at that time. About 140 non-academic staff at Medicine Hat College, represented by AUPE, have been in talks on new contract since June of 2020. The two sides are now in mediation.

The Health Sciences Association of Alberta has a first contract in place with Siksika Health Services after several years of legal wrangling over whether provincial rather than federal labour statutes applied.

The City of Lloydminster and its 350 unionized workers have new agreement that gives 2 per cent raises in each of year of a five-year deal.

That is the same schedule of raises for IBEW 254 members in the Town of Ponoka for a three-year term.

Red Deer’s firefighters (IAFF) will see a total increase of 7 per cents over a new four-year deal that concludes at the end of 2022.
