Medicine Hat College back to in-person convocations following two years off

By Medicine Hat News on June 9, 2022.

Medicine Hat College will celebrate the past three years of academic achievement with Friday’s first in-person convocation celebration since 2019.

Graduates from 2020 and 2021 will be honoured in a 10 a.m. ceremony, followed by the Class of 2022 at 1:30 p.m.

“Convocation over the last two years has taken different forms, but nothing can replace the energy and excitement of being together to celebrate this milestone,” MHC president and CEO Kevin Shufflebotham says in a Wednesday release from the college. “I hope each and every graduate will take a few moments this week to reflect on their achievements and be proud of how far they have come.”

Friday will also feature a handful of awards. Travis Boser, a graduate of the collaborative Bachelor of Education program, has been named student of the year, while Occupational Therapy Assistant/Physical Therapy Assistant program co-ordinator Preston Sloan has been named instructor of the year. Power engineering graduate Jean-Francois Marquis will be awarded with the Governor General’s Academic Medal for the highest overall average upon graduation.

Lastly, MHC will honour Elder Charlie Fox – Piitahonista, Eagle Calf - with the 2022 honorary applied baccalaureate degree. Fox is an Elder of the Kainai Nations Sacred Horn Society and member of the Blood Tribe.

“His specific contributions to the college are numerous,” reads the release. “He has personally advised on matters including the 2020 Land Blessing Ceremony for the new Indigenous space, the Indigenous strategic plan that will help MHC walk a new path, and assisted in the creation of a partnership with the Miywasin Friendship Centre.”
