Empress residents will elect new village council on Aug. 8 after resignations

Byelection day in Empress, Alta. will be Aug. 8 to choose an entirely new village council.

The population centre in Special Areas No. 2 was left without political leadership as well as a chief administrator after resignations from the three-person village council in early May.

A meeting of residents with the provincially appointed administrator last week formally transferred cheque-signing authority and set the election day and nomination day (July 11).

The village has a population of 148, according to the 2021 national census, up 13 residents from four years earlier.
