The cost of roof repairs on the Provincial Building in Medicine Hat is rising, according to new disclosure of changes to provincial construction contracts.

Work to replace skylights and the roof on the large office complex near the city centre began last fall, and is now expected to cost $3.65 million after it was discovered the gypsum board material should be replaced and upgraded to a modern material.

That is detailed in the May 15 edition of the Alberta Gazette, which details substantial changes to project budgets. In the specific case, cost rose by $1.3 million, or 31 per cent, after inspectors and consultants approved the change on the 45,000 square-foot roof.

The contractor is Peerless Building Products.
