Miywasin Friendship Centre and the Medicine Hat Public Library have partnered to host a Saamis Tepee tour, which highlights the site’s Indigenous history and cultural significance.

The hour-long tour is set to take place Sunday with Indigenous and Métis representatives from Miywasin and the public library guiding the tour. Participants will learn about the site the teepee is situated on, its establishment and the Indigenous people who contributed to it.

Following the tour, participants will join in an Indigenous craft-making activity with Miywasin cultural co-ordinator Brenda Mercer.

“I feel like this is an opportunity to get first-hand knowledge from Indigenous people,” said Mercer, who is Dakota Sioux. “You get to come and ask questions, which you might not have the opportunity to ask otherwise. And you gain knowledge.

“I’m very passionate about the archaeology site here and Medicine Hat. I love the teepee … and I just want to carry that on and share it with other people.”

Mercer says she is impressed with the interest Hatters have for the event. Already, pre-registration has filled.
