City turns attention to removal of common buckthorn at Police Point Park

The City of Medicine Hat and the Society of Grasslands Naturalists are once again partnering in the removal of common buckthorn from Police Point Park.

Classified as an invasive species, buckthorn threatens plants native to southeast Alberta and the region’s overall biodiversity.

Since the partnership began in 2021, more than 75 buckthorn shrubs have been removed from Police Point Park. Society members identify and extract the shrubs, which the city then disposes of.
