A man accused of ramming a stolen car through the garage door of a local shooting range and making off with firearms made his first appearance in Medicine Hat Provincial Court on Tuesday.

Josh Munro, 21, was arrested in Strathmore on May 12 after Redcliff Mounties began investigating a crash-and-dash robbery at the Canadian Gun Hub in Dunmore on May 5, during which, a “significant number” of firearms were stolen, according to authorities.

An agent for Munro’s defence attorney Greg White requested an adjournment of the matter to June 9, during which time the accused will remain in custody.

Crown prosecutor Jase Cowan, acting as agent for federal prosecutors, told the court the Crown would proceed by indictment on multiple charges, including breaking and entering to obtain a firearm, possessing stolen guns, restricted weapons and ammunition.

Munro also faces charges of possessing a quantity of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, which police say was seized when a search warrant was executed at a Strathmore area home.

Murder case proceeds

A preliminary hearing will be held in early 2023 in the case of a Cypress County resident charged with murdering her husband.

Deborah Belyea was charged with second-degree homicide in October 2021, five days after her husband, Cypress County councillor Alfred Belyea, was reported missing. His body was found in a rural location near Piapot, Sask. Belyea, who is also charged with performing an indignity to a human body, remains in custody ahead of the preliminary hearing, which is scheduled to take place Jan. 9-13, 2023.
