Kiwanis’ Best Block, Best Residence competition begins

The Kiwanis Club of Medicine Hat’s annual Best Kept Residence/Best Kept Block of the Week competition begins this week, with winners announced weekly in the News beginning June 11.

Judging teams from the Kiwanis Club are assigned one of 12 zones from across the city. Houses will be judged on their front yard – specifically creative landscaping, unusual features, xeriscaping, native plants, use of grass, shrubs, trees and flowers, and overall street appeal, according to a release.

After the 12-week program concludes, a final judging team will complete a thorough review of the 12 best homes and 12 top blocks, and select an overall winner in each category, with an award ceremony planned for September.

“(This year’s) program co-ordinators, Corry Hanlon and Dr. Wai Chow, are pleased that although the majority of the club’s activities were suspended over the past year due to COVID, that this did not negatively impact the club’s ability to continue with this 50-plus-year challenge,” reads the release.
