Worden resigns: Chief of MHPS stepping down effective immediately

Medicine Hat Police Services chief of police, Mike Worden, has stepped down from his role for personal reasons, MHPS released Monday.

Worden became chief of police in January 2021, taking over for former chief, now city councillor, Andy McGrogan.

A statement from Worden reads, “After great consideration, I have made the difficult decision to retire as Chief of Police for personal and family reasons. It was a great honour to lead this organization for the past 1.5 years. I am confident the Medicine Hat Police Commission will choose an effective leader to help guide the service into the future.

“I want to thank the men and women of the MHPS for their dedication and professionalism and the community for their unwavering support.”

As of Monday, Inspector of operational services Joe West has taken over as acting chief. West has been part of MHPS since 1997, having previously served for two years in the Calgary Police Service. He became an MHPS inspector in 2016.

West has been part of MHPS’ patrol section, training unit, tactical team, major crimes section, organized crimes section and executive team.
