Number of permits to build, upgrade ticks up in April

Multi-family residential permits were up in April as were commercial property upgrades, according to the latest figures released by the City of Medicine Hat’s planning department.

Year to date the estimated value of construction is tracking even with 2021, but with much less institutional spending linked to public sector projects.

A total of 59 permits in April were valued at $11.9 million, down from $15.9 million in the same month last year, which included $7.8 million in government projects.

New single-family homes in the recent month totalled five for a total of 12 in 2022, valued at $4.7 million, two fewer and $1 million less than at this point one year ago.

The major difference however is in new tri- and four-plexes as well as two new small apartment projects. A total of 29 units in six projects worth a combined $6.3 million are now permitted in 2022, about double the numbers from spring 2021.

Commercial alterations permitted in the month count seven worth $4.8 million combined. The four-month total is 27 permits worth $6.3 million.

New commercial buildings to this point were two worth $4.3 million.

The value of all permits released in 2022 was $28.2 million at April 30, about $230,000 less than during the same period last year.
