A provincial rest stop near Walsh is set for an upgrade to indoor plumbing.

The facility, located 1 kilometre east of the hamlet on the westbound Trans-Canada Highway is one of 10 sites named Friday in a $1.5-million proposal to improve Alberta Transportation-managed highway rest stops in the province.

A flushing toilet is among other upgrades that would also occur at the Strathmore vehicle inspection station in southern Alberta and another on Highway 1 near Banff.

That would replace an “outhouse-style” washroom there and at seven others located on the Yellowhead Highway 63 (to Fort McMurray), Highway 36 (near St. Paul) and in northeast Alberta.

“Motorists deserve to have safe, clean, modern and dignified washrooms as they travel our province’s highways. Improving these highway washrooms will benefit the travelling public, tourists and commercial drivers,” said Transport Minister Rajan Sawhney.
