A preliminary inquiry into a two-year-old attempted murder charge will proceed in May with two witnesses in the United States appearing via video conference.

Hamza Kamal Sindi, 26, was arrested at an Edmonton hotel in September 2020 and charged with firing a handgun at a home on the Southwest Hill in Medicine Hat on May 14 that year.

Medicine Hat Police reported at the time that a man approached the residence on the 200 Block of Fourth Street SW at 4:45 a.m. and fired “several shots” into the building.

Sindi is charged with attempted murder, discharging a restricted firearm, possessing a weapon obtained by crime, knowingly importing a restricted weapon and attempting to obtain a fraudulent identification card.

Crown Prosecutor Connor Doyle told court on Tuesday that two witnesses required at the preliminary hearing set for May 9 are located in the U.S.

With agreement from defence attorney Sarah Terry, they will appear via a video conferencing system at the hearing, which will determine whether the charges will advance to trial.
