Bow Island is considering lowering its non-posted speed limit in the town to 40 kilometres per hour.

That potential reduction, from 50 kilometres per hour, was introduced at town council’s meeting in late March with an open ended date to allow for “ample feedback” from residents, according to a notice put out by the town.

That would follow a similar debate in Calgary, Edmonton and other Alberta centres about lower speeds in residential areas for safety reasons.

The change in Bow Island would not effect Highway 3, which runs through the town, but be in effect on all other streets unless otherwise posted.

There is no immediate date for council to hear second reading of the bylaw that would amend the “Traffic Control Bylaw.”

Other substantial changes would ban residents from leaving recreational equipment, such as skateboard ramps, or parking tractors or heavy machinery on public roads.
