A Regina resident on his way west with his family is $70 million richer thanks to a lotto ticket purchased during a stop at the Co-op gas bar in Dunmore. Dale McEwen purchased the ticket on April 1, the day of the draw, but there was no joke to it when he used the Lotto Spot! app the next day to check his numbers – 7, 10, 18, 29, 38, 43 and 50. “Ski trip ruined,” he said while claiming the prize earlier this month, according to a release. “Basically, all we’ve been doing since we found out is figuring out what we will do now.” McEwen says he and his family have been making plans for their new wealth – helping family, travel, etc. – but are still trying to figure out exactly what to do with it all. “I can’t even describe it,” said McEwen. “Dreaming about winning and actually winning are two very different feelings. You think you know what it would feel like, but when it’s in your hands, your mind will not stop, and you can’t even sleep. “It is stressful, but not a bad stress.” The odds of matching all seven numbers on a LOTTO MAX draw are 1 in 33 million per play. McEwen’s ticket is the largest winning ticket sold by an Alberta retailer by a margin of $5 million. The next three largest jackpots sold in Alberta were: – In October 2019, a winner in Calgary took home a $65 million, previously the largest jackpot won in Western Canada; – In October 2018, an Edmonton winner won $60 million; – In September 2017, a winner in Yellowhead County got $60 million. 11
