Spring is in the air and butterflies are, too.

Butterflies of all colours and sizes have returned to John’s Butterfly House at the Windmill Garden Centre. Beginning April 20, the butterfly house will once again be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekly.

“When people come there should be at least 100 butterflies flying at all times,” Monica Lanz, a Windmill Garden Centre representative, told the News. “They’re nothing like the native butterflies we have here in Medicine Hat.”

Approximately 800 butterflies have travelled from the Philippines to John’s Butterfly House.

Beyond butterflies, there are also several kinds of birds and turtles who will take residence at the site.

“It’s a wonderful tropical place … to come and see,” said Lanz. “There’s a lot of tropical plants to look at. You can see them in their glory because (when) you buy them on the shelf, they’re a tiny little thing in a box, but here you can see a lot of them big and growing. You can see what it would look like in your home.”

Lanz recommends a visit to the butterfly house as a fun family outing. Admission fee is $8.50 for adults, $7 for seniors and $5 for children. A four-person family pack is also available for $24.
