Ponds, Coulees and Creeks by TREX features 33 local artists

An upcoming TREX Space exhibit looks to celebrate the natural landscape of southeast Alberta, as captured by local artists.

The community-organized exhibit, titled Ponds, Coulees and Creeks, features work from 33 Medicine Hat-based artists and will run from today until June 14.

“It’s scenery from in and around Medicine Hat, and when it’s personal like that, people really relate,” Genevieve Farrell, program manager and curator with TREX Southeast, told the News. “I think people will be really surprised by the calibre of work.”

A public come-and-go reception will be held Friday from 3-8 p.m. Several artists whose work is on display will be present at the reception, as well as members of the Society of Grasslands Naturalists and the South East Alberta Watershed Alliance, which partnered with TREX for the exhibit.

Martha Munz Gue, with SEAWA and the Society of Grasslands Naturalists, believes Hatters will enjoy viewing the familiar scenes and subjects depicted in each piece.

“It gives an opportunity for local artists who are interested in riparian areas and watersheds to express themselves and have a place to show their work,” Munz Gue told the News. “It (also) gives an opportunity for members of SEAWA and Grasslands Naturalists to share common interests and it gives an opportunity for the general public to view local scenes and the work of local artists.”

As well as Ponds, Coulees and Creeks, TREX Space is hosting a travelling exhibit titled We Are Still in Control, which features work from three prominent Blackfoot artists.

TREX Space is open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.
