A local group looking to take in Ukrainian refugees is partnering with the Community Foundation of Southeast Alberta to raise funds and other supports.

A release late Tuesday states that donations handled by the CFSEA for the effort will receive a tax receipt and will go toward cost of transportation, accommodation, rent and food for evacuees who arrive in Medicine Hat.

Eventually the group, “Hatters Help Ukraine” will also need volunteers and items such as furniture, gift cards and other donations.

“I have talked with over 50 people from Ukraine in the past few weeks and have been overwhelmed with the intensity of their trauma, grief and desperation,” said George Kovalev, himself an immigrant from Ukraine.

“If we can help them build a new life here in Medicine Hat, they can eventually regain that hope and their faith in humanity.”

More about the group can be found on Facebook or Instagram by searching for “Hatters Help Ukraine.”

Niki Gray, executive director of the Community Foundation, is also available to discuss donations and partnerships at the CFSEA office (403-527-9038).

“We’re thrilled to be partnered with Hatters Help Ukraine,” said Grant in a statement. “The devastation the country is experiencing is unimaginable … we are honoured to be of assistance.”
