The man who sped across the city after his girlfriend hung up the phone on him before crashing into her garage has lost his licence for a year.

Provincial Court heard on Thursday that Nicolas Ralph Deis was charged with dangerous driving after he drove his mother’s Lincoln Navigator at a high rate of speed from South Ridge to Southview on the evening of July 16, 2021.

Witnesses say he entered oncoming lanes at times, and police say he reached a radar-confirmed speed of 141 kilometres per hour in a school zone on Southview Drive.

He skidded to a stop in a nearby alley but could not avoid hitting a fence and detached garage, causing $20,000 in damage.

Prosecutors said he entered the residence and quickly returned outside in an apologetic manner to meet police who had been in pursuit.

“There was no impairment, he just appears to have been very angry,” said Crown prosecutor Ryan Antsy.

An agreement with defence attorney Greg White will see Dies serve a 90-day community sentence and lose driving privileges for 12 months.

“I’m glad no persons were injured,” said Judge Dietrich Brand.
