Nasty weather leaves thousands without early-morning power

High winds and intermittent sleet, which began in the early hours of Tuesday and continued on and off throughout the day, resulted in several Medicine Hat areas losing power.

City crews began working to resolve the issue before 5 a.m. Tuesday in the areas of South Ridge, Saamis Heights, Crestwood, Norwood, Ross Glen and Desert Blume, as well as Redcliff. By noon power was restored to the total of approximately 16,450 City of Medicine Hat customers affected.

Roughly 1,600 Fortis Alberta customers in Dunmore, Irvine, Hilda, Suffield and surrounding areas also lost power. Approximately 75-80 of those customers will not have their power restored until today.

While schools within Medicine Hat remained open, several in Prairie Rose Public Schools were closed due to the weather. The Medicine Hat Waste Management Faculty also closed, and will remain so until further notice by the City of Medicine Hat.
