https://www.medicinehatnews.com@MedicineHatNews A series of public hearings this spring into real property rights in Alberta got underway Friday in Edson before the special committee of the legislature arrives in Medicine Hat next month. The committee is tasked with examining whether current legislation of expropriation and avenues for compensation and remedy are adequate, as well as whether adverse possession, also known as squatters rights, should be abolished in the province. The 12-member multi-party committee is chaired by Highwood MLA R.J. Sigurdson and includes Brooks-Medicine Hat MLA Michaela Frey. It will hold its next public meeting April 1 in St. Paul, before coming south to Medicine Hat on April 12 (9-11 a.m. at the Medicine Hat Lodge), before an evening meeting that same day in Fort Macleod. Anyone wishing to make a presentation to the committee must register with the committee’s clerk by phone (587-404-3735) or email (RPRCommittee.Admin@assembly.ab.ca). Meetings will also be held in Hanna on April 13, and conclude with an event in Eckville on April 14. The final report of the committee is due in June. 9
