A car that lost control after coming over the Allowance Avenue overpass wiped out a fence and balconies on a housing complex just after midnight on Sunday morning.

Medicine Hat police say the northbound vehicle was travelling at a high rate of speed when it jumped the curb on the bend coming on to Maple Avenue. It then came to a stop in the backyards of a multi-unit residential building that backed onto the 500 block of Maple Avenue.

Damage is estimated at $100,000. No one was seriously injured.

An unnamed Medicine Hat man is charged with dangerous driving.

Liquor store holdup

Cops who were looking into a report of a man making threats at a home in Crescent Heights observed a robbery taking place at a nearby liquor store on Saturday night, police said Monday.

Officers, who were patrolling the area on the initial call, waited outside the business and apprehended the suspect when he came out allegedly carrying cash from the register and a hunting knife.

He is in custody awaiting a bail hearing on charges of robbery, wearing a disguise to commit an offence, possessing a dangerous weapon and uttering threats.

Police did not release a name.

One person was reportedly injured, but the blaze was limited to the detached garage and did not spread to other homes of buildings on the 200 block of Ross Glen Drive.
