The number of new COVID cases in both Saskatchewan as a whole and Southwest Saskatchewan fell by half over the last week, though hospitalization are up.

The province that now releases COVID case statistics on a weekly basis each Thursday stated that from Feb. 6-12, a total of 83 new cases were confirmed in the Maple Creek and Swift Current areas. That is about half the case figure from the previous week (157). One new death was reported, bringing the total number of fatalities in the region to 41.

Across the province 42 COVID-related fatalities were recorded last week, and 2,522 positive COVID diagnoses were down from 5,400 in the week ending Feb. 5.

Saskatchewan did not provide an “active case” total or analysis in its 20-page report.

Hospitalizations for the entire province rose by 26 patients to 410 on Feb. 16., while ICU patients rose by seven to 33.

Those in hospital with COVID-related illness were counted as 181 (up 21), while COVID as a incidental factor were 221 (up 15).
