Municipalities in southwest Saskatchewan are in potential collaboration talks toward advocating for health facilities, arranging regional fire protection and spurring recreation projects.

Southern Alberta Newspapers reports the concept was discussed during inter-municipal meetings at the Rural Municipality of Maple Creek office early this month, and involved officials from that RM, the RMs of Piapot and Big Stick, as well as the town of Maple Creek.

Eventually the parties would like to engage the RM of Reno and other towns and villages, such as Fox Valley and potentially Gull Lake in discussing support for private ambulance service, pushing for hospital services centred in Maple Creek, a regional fire co-ordination official, promoting agriculture and joint regional recreation facilities.

Cost rise

Design work to renovate the marina at Elkwater Lake awarded 18 months ago by Alberta parks, is costlier than first thought.

The contract was awarded to design engineering firm WSP in September 2020 but was newly noted on a required list of government procurement items that resulted in substantial increases over original budget estimates.

The $179,000 contract is about 18 per cent higher than the original estimate, but was approved with the explanation that a change in scope proposed will create better and longer lasting changes and upgrades to the dock located in the Elkwater townsite.
