Siksika Nation is polling its members toward creating a tribal police force.

The reserve near Bassano is currently policed by the Gleichen RCMP detachment, but this week a release states the band council is examining building a business case to create a local police service.

Two other Blackfoot nations in Alberta provide their own policing units, including the Blood Tribe Police Service, near Cardston. The Tsuut’tina Nation Police Force, west of Calgary, has been in operation since 2004.

There is no stated timeline for the issue at Siksika, but a questionnaire sent out this week asks about preference to create a local service, thoughts on local crime, priorities and crime prevention, as well as expectations of a local service.
