Unionized workers with Canadian Pacific Railway are now voting on potential strike action.
The Teamsters Rail Conference sent out ballots by mail early this month to its 3,000 engineers, conductors and train and yard personnel in both Eastern and Western Canada. That will determine whether the union’s bargaining committee would be in a legal strike position if current talks fail to replace the contract that expired at the end of 2021.
On Thursday, the union registered the dispute with the Labour Ministry in Ottawa, stating the main issues are wagers, benefits and pensions.
A potential strike could not take place until 21 days after conciliation talks are completed with the aid of an appointed mediator.
A bulletin states that after very brief meetings in February with contract mediators and the company, the next round of talks are set to begin in mid-March.
About 250 unionized workers are employed at the Medicine Hat marshalling yard.
