Cases are down but hospitalizations are up in southwestern Saskatchewan where the provincial government is reading a plan to lift most pandemic health restrictions.

In areas around Maple Creek and Swift Current on Thursday, positively identified active cases fell again, to 175, continuing a trend down from an all-time high above 400 cases on Jan. 23. On the same day in the specific health region, hospitalizations rose by three to seven in total.

Across the province hospitalizations have risen to their highest point of the pandemic during 2022, from 59 in-patients and 12 in intensive care at Jan. 3 to 329 in-patients and 34 in ICU at Feb. 3.

Four new deaths in the province brought the total number of COVID-related deaths in Saskatchewan to 1,001. Total active cases were 10,271, about 3,000 fewer than two weeks ago.
