Sherriane Schalm, the Brooks product, former Olympic fencer and now high performance coach, will miss the Beijing Games that start Friday after a COVID diagnosis.

Schalm, who now lives in Italy, made the announcement on her social media feed earlier this week.

“Aaaand… my thousand mile journey ends abruptly with a positive test,” she wrote on her LinkedIn profile, stating members of her household were doing well, but she was unable to travel and disappointed.

The four-time Olympian and World Cup title winner in 2006 was set to work with athletes in various winter sports at this month’s Games.

Schalm said that she was grateful not to have passed the disease to anyone else and added she was confident in the remainder of the Canadian Olympic team staff and wished the athletes good luck.

Some events and coverage of the event in China were scheduled to take place Wednesday.

The opening ceremonies are scheduled to begin at 4:30 a.m. (MST) on Friday.
