Police say they seized a rifle that was made to appear as a children’s toy, along with a 25-round magazine, drugs and stolen ID from a traffic stop in the city last week.

A 26-year-old man from Airdrie was arrested and held in custody after Medicine Hat police officers found the .22-calibre rifle along with 7.2 grams of what they say is fentanyl, on Jan. 21.

Police also say the identification number on the gun was partially defaced and the muzzle painted orange to give it the appearance of an air-soft rifle.

Medicine Hat police chief said the alterations give the case a “disturbing” aspect.

“Disguising a real firearm to look like a toy makes the job of our officers near impossible,” Mike Worden said.

The man’s name was not released.

Stolen car pursuit

A local man and woman alleged to have stolen a car in Swift Current were arrested with the help of a police dog on Saturday.

Local police say they were contacted that day by the RCMP in Saskatchewan, who said they tracked a GPS unit in a stolen car to a Medicine Hat address.

When Medicine Hat officers investigated they found the suspects sitting in the vehicle in a driveway, before it pulled out and led police on a brief chase.

In later stopped “in a yard” and a foot chase ensued.

The man and woman, both 26, were detained and charged with possessing stolen property above $5,000, resisting arrest and flight from police. Their names were not disclosed.
