A Calgary-based renewable energy developer has submitted plans to build a 60-megawatt solar farm near Vauxhall.

SolarKrafte Utilities already designed and sold two solar facilities in the M.D. of Taber which are now in operation by owner Belectric. Two more of its projects, near Enchant and Strathmore, are being advanced by Capital Power.

The third solar farm near Vauxhall would be located about five kilometres northwest of the townsite on 260 hectares of private land.

It was submitted to the Alberta Utilities Commission on Thursday for approval.

Written submissions on proceeding No. 27077 will be received until Feb. 9.

A timeline on the company’s website states it wished to submit the application last month, and, if approved would commence construction in the fall of 2022 after local development permits are sought.

Wind farm re-issued

A decade-old plan to erect wind turbines near Seven Persons received a new permit from the Alberta Utilities Commission in late December.

The Peace Butte Wind Farm, owned by Pteragen, was required to reapply for permits with the AUC after the regulator ruled too much time had passed since an initial 2013 approval.

The facility would comprise 22 turbine towers on land near the corner of the Black and White Trail and Township Road 102, south west of Medicine Hat. It’s maximum generating capacity of 122 megawatts in peak conditions.

The company stated it plans to deposit a required payment to the Alberta Electric System Operator in June 2023 and have the plant in operation in 2025.
