Two candidates will vie for vacant council position in Cypress County

Keith Ritz and Layla Vickerman will vie for the open position on Cypress County council in a Feb. 7 byelection, the county announced Monday.

The deadline to submit a nomination was noon Monday, with only the two candidates opting to enter the race for Ward 9 councillor.

The position became available following the death of former Coun. Alf Belyea in October. Belyea was in line to be acclaimed in the Oct. 18 municipal election.

The byelection will be held at Suffield Community Hall on Feb. 7, with polls open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Advance voting will also be available on Saturday, Feb. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Bob Olson won the last vote held for the Ward 9 councillor position back in 2010, when he garnered 112 votes to defeat incumbent Peter Konosky, who had 29.
