Nominations are due by noon Monday to fill a vacant Cypress County council seat ahead of a scheduled byelection.

The seat for Ward 9, representing the Suffield/Jenner area, was not filled in the October municipal election after incumbent candidate Alf Beyea died following the nomination day. As the only nominee he would have been acclaimed.

With no process available to reopen nominations ahead of the vote, it was left vacant and a new election for the ward set for Feb. 7.

The county returning officer reports that as of Thursday, only one nomination package had been received. Keith Ritz is registered to be on the ballot that would be decided by voting at the Suffield Community Hall on Monday, Feb. 7, with advance voting on Feb. 5.

If only one package is received, the position would be acclaimed and no election would be held.

Nominations also close on Monday, Jan. 17 in the race to fill the Division 7 seat that garnered no nominations last fall.

The area, comprising regions directly northeast and southeast of Bow Island, had been represented by former reeve Steve Wikkerink, who announced his retirement last summer.

If required an election would be held Feb. 14.
