City council’s first meeting of 2022 is scheduled for tonight in a rare Tuesday meeting to accommodate the statutory holiday on Monday.

Council members will conduct a public hearing into the final development permits applied for by the city’s own land development office for the “Towne Square” project located across from city hall.

The parking lot on the parcel was resurfaced in 2021, but the final landscaping, a canopy, food truck stalls and the placement of shipping containers that will act as “for lease” market stalls are subject to permit requirements. Since the land is designated as “direct control” of council, permitting is legally council’s decision and a non-statutory hearing is required.

Council will also hear a presentation on tourism efforts in what is otherwise a light agenda.

Public attendance at city hall chambers is limited but available by current capacity rules from provincial health authorities. Mask-wearing is also required. The proceedings can be viewed live at the city’s website or on local Shaw-TV channel (cable-10), starting at 6:30 p.m.
