A major expansion at Alberta’s first utility-scale solar power facility is almost complete.

The “Brooks Solar” plant was first commissioned in 2017, and the owner, Elemental Energy applied in 2019 and received approval from regulators to build two concurrent expansions last year.

This week the Alberta Electric System Operator reports it will add Brooks Solar 1 and 2 to its trading system on Dec. 14, with commissioning and production starting at a later date.

The new facilities, built on portions of quarter-sections adjacent to the original plant, are capable of producing a combined 27-megawatts of power in peak production, bringing the capacity of the entire complex to 42-megawatts.

Capstone Infrastructure and Sask Power are hailing the completion of the Riverhurst wind farm near Lake Diefenbaker, north of Chaplin, Sask.

The project has a capacity of just 10 megawatts, which is under contract with the Crown power provider, and is the first completed by the Toronto-based firm in Saskatchewan.

Capstone is also the developer of the Buffalo Atlee 1-2-3-4 cluster wind developments (53 megawatts in total) in Special Areas No. 2 east of Jenner. The scheduled completion date for those projects is late 2022.
