In the month since assuming the role of chair for Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education’s board of trustees, Kathy Glasgo has learned a lot.
Glasgo was nominated and sworn in as chair at MHCBE’s Oct. 26 board meeting, succeeding former board chair and current trustee Dick Mastel.
Glasgo, who served as a division trustee last term, is still “getting used to the job,” but she feels supported by those within the division as well as her fellow trustees.
“We have an amazing senior admin team (as well as) the trustees,” Glasgo told the News. “So, it’s hard not to do well when that’s who you’re with. (Former chair) Dick Mastel has been great – everybody has. When you step into a role you’ve never done … it’s an eye opener, but it’s a good eye-opener. I’ve been a life-long learner all my life, so I enjoy the challenge.”
Throughout the term, Glasgo hopes to implement several new programs and services within the division, such as offering free menstrual products to students. She also hopes to re-examine and improve on several existing policies and systems within MCHBE, such as the safety of school drop-off zones. In addition, she and the other trustees aim to increase Catholicity throughout the board.
“Catholicity (should be) the focal point of our school board. That’s why we’re there. We’re the teaching arm of our church,” she said.
While Glasgo did not go into this year’s election with the ambition of becoming board chair, she hopes to do well in the position.
“I think it’s very important that there is a chair – a leader. That person sort of sets the tone. It set the tone for the meeting but it also sets the tone as the public sees you,” said Glasgo.
“I would like to set a tone that is the same as our church. Pope Francis said that our church should be the joy of the gospel and I would like to see myself set that kind of a tone that we are portraying the gospel values and we are setting out what Christ wanted us to do,” she said.
