The hunt continues for contributors to a millennium time capsule unearthed at Mother Teresa School earlier this year.

Jacquie Clarkson, an education assistant at Mother Teresa School, has been working to track down students and families who added to the capsule since its rediscovery. So far, she’s found approximately 110 of the 144 individuals who took part.

“It started back in 1999, when our administrator had the idea to do a millennium project,” Clarkson, who was working at the school at that time, told the News. “(The administrator) thought it would be fun to end the millennium with our students or families putting entries into a time capsule and sealing it up for 20 or 25 years.”

Kindergarten to Grade 6 students and their families were provided envelopes and invited to put inside anything they wished.

“I don’t know what was in the envelopes,” said Clarkson. “Kids were told they could put anything in there, so if they had a special toy or memento. Most parents, I think, contributed letters to their children with sentiments about their years at Mother Teresa or whatever they wanted really … I think there were probably some very personal letters, memories. Some kids decorated their envelopes and made them fun and glued things on them.”

Afterwards, the time capsule was sealed and hidden in the school. It was then largely forgotten.

“Much of the staff had changed at the school so there was really only myself and another teacher who were (still) employed at the school when it was found,” said Clarkson.

Immediately, Clarkson and other staff began returning envelopes.

“The response is just so heartwarming when people do get these back and some people were just unaware that they had even contributed something – they had forgotten about it … Seeing the smiles when you hand them their envelope, it’s pretty cool,” said Clarkson.

There are approximately 30 envelopes which remain unclaimed. Clarkson encourages anyone who may have been a student of Mother Teresa in 1999 to contact the school and inquire if there is an envelope with their name or their family’s name on it.
