Byelection for vacant Cypress County seat will go in February

A byelection to fill the vacant seat for Suffield on Cypress County council will be held on Feb. 7, 2022, council’s meeting in Dunmore heard on Tuesday.

The previous councillor for ward nine, Alf Belyea, had been acclaimed as the only candidate leading up to the Oct. 18 municipal election.

Police say he died at some point during the week before the vote. His wife is been charged with murder.

The timing meant no election could be held for the district that includes areas in the county’s north west.

A nomination day will be held Jan. 10, though nominations can be accepted at any point through that business day at the county office.

Communications officer Sean Rooney will act as chief returning officer.
