For the second year in a row, Medalta has replaced its usual Black & White Gala with a raffle that will land one lucky Hatter a cash prize for the holidays.

“Like a lot of charities, we were unable to do our signature fundraising event in 2021,” said Mike Onieu, executive director of Medalta. “The Black & White Gala is normally a huge celebration where we’re able to say thank-you to our supporters and also host our single largest fundraising event in the year. We have to cancel it due to COVID this year, for the second year in a row, and we’re looking at other ways to generate support, so we are going with a raffle this year.”

The Black & White Gala brought in a significant amount of fundraising. April Mandziak, marketer at Medalta, hopes the raffle will do the same.

“Our goal is to raise $300,000 with half of that going towards one lucky winner,” said Mandziak in an email to the News. “The minimum guaranteed win is $10,000 with a maximum payout of up to $150,000.”

Onieu says Medalta is offering one of the largest prizes of all local raffles.

“The raffle is on now,” Onieu said. “Ticket sales close on the 17th and we will do the draw on the 18th. Some lucky winner will hopefully have their Christmas presents paid for. It’s a just-in-time for the Holidays type of raffle.”

Onieu says not only is it a great replacement for their usual fundraising event, it’s also something fun for the community.

“I think the big draw is the fact that you’re supporting a community institution and helping us deliver on our mission which is to perpetuate industrial heritage and promote contemporary ceramics,” explained Onieu. “It supports our youth programming and the youth activities that we do and helps us put on community programming as well. You’re helping Medalta but I think the big draw here is you’re going to win a stack of cash right in time for Christmas.”

The raffle is entirely online.

“There are no physical tickets. You can go to medalta.org. That will get you to our holiday 50/50 Raffle and from there, there’s a one-button click to take you to the ticket purchases,” said Onieu. “They are one ticket for $10, four for $20, 20 for $50 and 100 for $100.”

Dec. 17 is the last day to purchase tickets and the draw will be made Dec. 18.

“A thank-you to our community for their enduring support to Medalta and to all the other organizations in the community,” Onieu said. “It’s a really awesome place to be and a really supportive community. We’re appreciative.”
