High risk incident as a result of search warrant

By Medicine Hat News on November 18, 2021.

Medicine Hat Police Services Regional Property Crimes Unit was called to a high risk incident Wednesday afternoon while executing a search warrant.

The Regional Property Crimes Unit had obtained a search warrant for a residence in the 100 block of First Avenue SW., that allowed entry to the location to search for stolen property and weapons.

Once at the location, police say several people exited the building after police contained the residence and ordered the exit of all occupants.

MHPS say officers were able to determine that the primary offender had refused to exit and had barricaded himself within the residence, with stolen property and weapons. As a result, MHPS say members of their tactical team, K-9 unit and crisis negotiators attended the location.

MHPS announced the high risk incident at 2:17 p.m. on Twitter, asking people to avoid the area. MHPS released a statement four hours later that said at approximately 5:15 p.m. members of the crisis negotiators team were able to successfully negotiate the suspect from the residence, without injury.

A 39-year old Medicine Hat resident is currently in police custody for several offences. Police say the accused’s name will be released after the conclusion of the investigation and the formal charges have been laid.
