Active COVID-19 cases in Medicine Hat have dropped below 100 for the first time since late July.

New case figures published late Wednesday show 99 active cases in Medicine Hat, continuing a decline of cases that spiked to 696 cases on Sept. 28.

That new figure is the result of five new diagnoses combined with 13 recoveries from Tuesday. The difference equals eight fewer active cases.

No new deaths were recorded, leaving the total at 78, three-quarters of which occurred in the last two months as cases spread quickly in August.

The recent high-point in cases came 13 days after the province declared a state of emergency and announced new restrictions aimed at preventing further spread.

The local active case peak was six times higher than the 113 recorded from the second wave in December 2020.

The peak in the third wave was 232 active cases recorded last May.

Figures released Wednesday by Alberta Health also showed Cypress County and Redcliff geographic area with 23 active cases, and the County of Forty Mile with 19.
