Snow geese migration watch party organized for Sunday

Medicine Hat’s Interpretive Program is offering Hatters an opportunity to witness the annual snow geese migration this coming Sunday.

Thousands of snow geese, best known for their white feathers, pass through the prairie region biannually. Park interpreters will be leading attendees to local locations where the snow geese are likely to land.

“The fall migration is one of the remaining wildlife spectacular events that still exist,” Corlaine Gardner, chief interpreter, told the News. “They’re not here through the summer or through the winter, so there’s only two opportunities to see them.”

Anyone wanting to attend is asked to meet in the parking lot of the A&W on Gershaw Drive at 2 p.m. Sunday, from which participants will drive in their own vehicle to the location. With travel time, the tour could take several hours. Participants are encouraged to dress warmly and are invited to bring binoculars or a camera, as there will also be other animals present, such as Canadian geese, tundra swans, ducks, grebes, coots and loons.
