The annual campaign to raise the issue of domestic violence kicks off in Medicine Hat this week with Police Chief Mike Worden saying all Hatters should be aware of the problem and how to seek help.

A Medicine Hat man was charged with second-degree murder on Monday in what police allege was a case of domestic violence.

“It really highlights the importance of understanding family violence and the resources that are available,” said Worden, who took part in a ribbon-tying campaign near Medicine Hat police headquarters on Thursday.

“People of Medicine hat should know when they themselves, a family member or a friend is in a situation of concern, who they can contact, what services they provide and the anonymity involved.”

For several years the police and Medicine Hat women’s shelter have partnered to operate the “Safe Families Intervention Team,” which follows up on each domestic violence instance reported to police.

The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter will begin its part of the campaign on Monday.

Its crisis line can be reached by phoning 403-529-1091 or toll-free, 1-800-661-7949.

A provincial family violence information line can be reached by calling 310-1818.
