Halloween is usually a time for carefree fun, but with the COVID-19 pandemic still ongoing the province is requesting Albertans take extra precautions this year to protect themselves and others.

Wearing a mask, practising social distancing between members of different households, limiting the number of surfaces touched and washing or sanitizing hands frequently are just some of the things that can be done to limit the spread of COVID-19.

The government offered additional safety measures for each means of celebration.

Trick-or-treating

– Call “trick-or-treat” from at least two metres distance

Handing out candy

– Hand out candy outside, in the garage or on a front porch;

– Place a barrier, like a table, between yourself and trick-or-treaters to ensure social distancing;

– If using the self-serve system, make individual bags of treats and space them out;

– If handing out directly, use tongs or a container from which the trick-or-treaters can take the treats. Refill the container with each new household of trick-or-treaters;

– Develop a non-contact way to deliver treats, like a candy catapult;

– Sanitize surfaces that are frequently touched.

Participating in or hosting an event

– Hold the event outdoors;

– If offering food and drink, provide individual portions rather than a self-serve buffet or punch bowl;

– Don’t share food or drink;

– Sanitize surfaces that are frequently touched;

– Remember, if feeling unwell, stay home.
