A new solar power plant near the Trans-Canada Highway at Gleichen has been approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission.

“Gleichen Solar” would be built on 71 acres of private land located about two kilometres northeast of town and likely visible from where the TCH curves northward.

The original applicant was TIU Canada Ukraine Holdco., though the project owner is now Gleichen Solar Project Inc., or GPS. The 13.3-megawatt capacity plant was originally proposed in 2018, but submitted for formal approval this past summer.

The approval calls for the facility to be built by the end of January 2023. A report states the company plans to begin construction in March 2022.
