A Medicine Hat man faces a raft of charges including assaulting a police officer with a weapon after authorities say he led them on a two-day cross-provincial crime spree.

Craig Edward Perini, 31, appeared in Medicine Hat Provincial Court on Thursday to face 23 charges, while Joshua Francis McCarthy, 35, faces six charges, including possessing stolen property in excess of $5,000.

Police say the arrests are connected to several thefts that began in Leader, Sask., and continued with break-ins at businesses in Cypress County and Redcliff on Oct. 5 and 6.

Perini was arrested near Stettler, Alta. later that day following a six-hour highway search, and a search of a Medicine Hat residence led to charges laid against McCarthy.

Police say GPS equipment in one truck stolen along with tools, a trailer and heavy equipment helped them locate it travelling on Highway 1 and after a high-speed pursuit was called off.

Several detachments were involved in the arrest at a rural residence.

Perini is charged with breaking and entering, six counts of dangerous driving, possessing of a prohibited weapon, mischief and possession of stolen property under and above $5,000.
