Bones discovered last fall on the Southeast Hill were likely those of an early settler, according to latest report from the Chief of Police to the Medicine Hat Police Commission.

Crews replacing water and sewer lines discovered the remains on Sept. 15, 2020 near the intersection of Belfast Street and Sixth Avenue, in the vicinity of where an historic grave was found in an alleyway during 2013.

Last autumn, work was suspended and further remains were found several days later. The Alberta Medical Examiners office has reported back to local police that the bones are human and “appear to be from a settler burial site (dating) from between 1885 and 1910.”

The Medicine Hat townsite was founded with the arrival of the railroad in 1883.

The local report states the remains were returned to Medicine Hat for reinterment, at which time a ceremony was held in conjunction with the Miywasin Centre.
