Active COVID cases in southwest Saskatchewan set a new record last week and continue to race upwards, according to figures released by that province’s health authority.

A total of 244 active cases were recorded in the health zone as of Monday.

The previous high was set Dec. 6, 2020 at 143, a figure topped recently on Sept. 20.

The current total includes 87 cases in rural area including Maple Creek, while another 147 are in Swift Current or immediate area.

Of those, 22 are in hospital. A total of 27 deaths have been recorded in the combined area.

The province of Saskatchewan announced last week that first-shot vaccinations totalled nearly 21,000 over the two-week period ending Sept. 20, marking a 50 per cent increase from the previous period.

In total, 818,000 first doses have been recorded in the province of 1.1 million people, as of Sept. 27.
