An Alberta couple that obtained deer hunting licences in Saskatchewan at the cost for residents have been fined $14,000, conservation officials reported this month.

Officials say the man and women from Veteran, Alta. pleaded guilty in provincial court to misrepresenting their address, lying to a conservation officers and improperly taking and tagging a deer.

The investigation began in the fall of 2020 when the couple was pulled over for a traffic violation near Turtleford, about an hour east of Lloydminster. The officer noticed a tag had been misapplied. Further investigation found the couple had not lived in the province since 2018, but applied for “resident”, rather than non-resident, hunting licences.

The judgment includes a three-year ban on obtaining a hunting licence in the province.

Alberta-bound boat

Inspectors in Saskatchewan intercepted a boat bound for Alberta that was contaminated with invasive zebra mussels at the end of August, that province’s Ministry of the Environment announced Thursday.

The boat had been purchased in Manitoba by an Alberta resident shortly before it passed through an inspection station at Moosimin, east of Regina.

The craft was disinfected by conservation officers and the owner issued a warning.

Provincial governments of Saskatchewan and Alberta, along with irrigation districts have mounted a major campaign to keep the invasive species out of Alberta’s waterways to keep the rapidly reproducing aquatic animal from clogging piping and harming waterways.

Boaters who do not clean hauls, discharge bilge, dry and disinfect crafts before transporting them between provinces and bodies of water can face fines or property seizure.
